The Art of Intention in Travel: Inspired by Japan
Our top-performing travel advisors, the Cadence Elite, recently returned from Japan on what was by all accounts, a transformational trip. What they brought home can't be put in a suitcase. It can’t be put in an envelope or shipped out to sea. It lives in their hearts, in the stories they tell, in the smiles they share. It’s the feeling of connection, of moments that mattered. It’s something they'll carry forever.
For Wendy Burk, Cadence CEO and Founder, her tenth visit to Japan turned out to be one of the most unforgettable trips she’s ever had. Ever. But what made it so special? “Being in Japan taught me the art of mindfulness,” she expressed. “To truly live in each moment, knowing it will never come again.”
“Japan is a masterclass in respect. It isn’t just cultural, it’s foundational. You feel it in the bow of a guide, the precision of a meal, the silence of a shrine. It’s that deep sense of intentionality and grace that I’m most excited to pass along to my clients”
This sense of presence was beautifully echoed throughout our accommodations, provided by The Ritz Carlton. Each property offered its own window into reflection. By the serene Lake Chuzenji, The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko embraced the stillness of nature with a zazen meditation that invited a profound sense of calm. The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo, perched high above the bustling city, framed quiet moments of reflection alongside breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. And at The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto, the gentle Kamo River and moonlit gardens created a poetic harmony rooted in tradition.
Outside of the hotels, wondertrunk & co brought Japan’s culture and traditions to life in ways that defied all expectation. They unlocked opportunities few could dream of. Private time with monks. An invitation-only ancient tea ceremony. A sumo wrestling session. Learning the ancient art of Samurai. Dinner accompanied by geishas. The list goes on. “Their attention to detail was fabulous. They think outside the box for our high-end clients,” shared Sheri of the Sheri Gottschalk Group.
Start to finish, this trip wasn’t just about luxury. It wasn’t about adventure. It really wasn’t even about recognition. It was about embracing a deeper philosophy, the art of intention, a concept woven into the very fabric of Japanese culture.
TIMELESS WISDOM | japanese tradition
UNDERSTANDING THE ART OF INTENTION
Japan’s culture deeply embraces mindfulness and a connection to nature. While many countries observe four seasons, Japan recognizes 72 microseasons, each celebrating nature's subtle shifts. Menus change weekly to highlight what’s fresh, making canceling reservations a sign of disrespect.
What struck Jeff of Travel Concierge by Jeff Lavender most was Japan’s harmony, respect, and pristine beauty. “No honking, no graffiti, just absolute professionalism everywhere.” Leigh Rowan from Savanti Travel noted that venturing beyond tourist hubs unveils a refreshingly unique side of Japan, encouraging you to slow down, and fully appreciate everything around you.
finding joy in the details
One of the country’s defining traits is a focus on small, deliberate details. Alyson Nash of Cloud 10 Travel noted, “The Japanese people have a deep respect for their culture, and that intentionality shows in everything from food to attire and traditions.”
From the precision of a tea ceremony to the art of "kintsugi" (repairing pottery with gold) every practice encourages detail and finding beauty in imperfection. This appreciation for the simple is further highlighted in immersive experiences. Diane Sherer from Beyond Traveled shared how garden meditations were personal highlights. “Having such intimate and powerful experiences with everyone was incredible, and so unique to Japan,” she added. It's important to take pauses that allow you to fully connect with the world around you.
SUSTAINABILITY & RESPECT FOR NATURE
Shintoism (the country’s traditional belief system) plays a big role in fostering a deep respect for nature. Shintoism reflects the belief that nature itself is sacred. This mindset inspires a way of life that values sustainability, minimizing waste and using resources wisely. Wendy recalls how people in Japan carry their trash despite the scarcity of trashcans, remarking, “The cleanliness and precision are astounding… everyone understands the rules and works together to keep the environment spotless.” This cultural value of cherishing and protecting nature is something the world can learn from.
harmony of modern & traditional
One highlight that echoed through everyone’s experience is the country’s beautiful duality of timeless traditions and modern innovations. Alyson Nash describes how surreal it was pairing centuries-old tea houses with a visit to teamLab Borderless, witnessing cutting-edge art installations. "It's like stepping into two entirely different worlds", she said. “And I can’t wait to go back!” This experience is a powerful reminder that life thrives in balance. By honoring where we come from while staying open to what’s ahead, we can elevate our lives in the way Japan elevates every experience—with harmony, depth, and a touch of wonder.
INTENTIONAL ITINERARIES | memorable journeys
Cadence Elite trip provided an unforgettable opportunity for advisors to learn and grow. Lisa Buros-Hutchins from Your World Experience said, “Having an intimate knowledge of Japan now changes everything. To experience the destination firsthand, especially in such an exclusive way, is invaluable.” With firsthand expertise, advisors can confidently guide others toward meaningful, intentional travel. These experiences provided tips and tricks on how to go beyond the tourist destinations for ultimate privatization.
“These cultural experiences help us reset and embrace simple, present moments—whether meditating in nature, walking with joyful schoolchildren, or breathing by the lake. The Japanese share these profound experiences effortlessly.”
PERSONALIZING TRAVEL ITINERARIES. Advisors can craft meaningful trips by prioritizing cultural experiences like private tea ceremonies or guided shrine visits. These moments create deep connections to the destination. Mindfulness practices, such as garden meditations or time in nature, can also enhance itineraries. Diane Sherer shared, “Personally, this trip inspired me to relax and live more in the moment. Professionally, it just reaffirmed how special Japan is.”
CREATING SPACE FOR CONNECTION. Rushing through destinations makes it hard to connect with local cultures or fellow travelers. Including unscheduled time or tranquil experiences, like guided hikes, can transform a trip. Jeff Lavendar said, “This trip showcased the value of curated, immersive experiences and the role they play in elevating how we guide our clients.”
EMBODYING THOUGHTFUL CARE. Japan teaches a powerful lesson in respect, woven into every detail—from the bow of a guide to the quiet grace of a shrine. Luke Breaux of DCM Travel shares, “It’s that deep sense of intentionality and grace that I’m most excited to pass along to my clients.” Leigh Rowan, inspired by witnessing The Ritz-Carlton’s '10-Steps of Service' in action, emphasizes the importance of daily values like gratitude. Together, these insights show how respect and care can elevate both travel experiences and the way we engage in our work. Thoughtfulness, after all, changes everything.

THE CADENCE ELITE | community of care
Have you ever experienced a moment so special that it stays with you, not because of where you were, but because of who you were with? That’s the backbone of the Cadence advisor community. Sure, strolling through Kyoto’s enchanting streets and sipping matcha in a serene tea ceremony were unforgettable highlights. But the real treasure lies in the laughter, the camaraderie, and the way this community always lifts each other up. These connections turned fellow advisors into lifelong friends. That spirit doesn’t end when the trip does. It’s the heart of everything Cadence stands for.
“Our group bonded in such a meaningful way. We found out that while our businesses are all different, there’s so much business to go around, and we shared tips and tricks that could truly help each other.”
What’s the true value of being Elite?
As Lisa Buros-Hutchins expressed, “The opportunity to connect with this extraordinary group of advisors means you're always listening and learning. Someone was always sharing an experience or idea, and it was just inspiring.” Luke Breaux added, “I cherished the one-on-one connections I had with fellow advisors, the wondertrunk team, our guides, and hotel partners.”
Why is Cadence unique?
Jeff Lavender shared, “Unlike other recognition programs, Cadence’s attention to detail and immense care under Wendy’s leadership makes it truly unique.” At Cadence, advisors aren’t just acknowledged for their success—they’re celebrated with intent and purpose, in ways that feel personal and inspiring. Carol Porter of The Roaming Boomers had this advice for aspirational advisors: “Do whatever it takes to make and stay Elite.
