Authentic lesser-traveled experiences in Italy
Italy offers so much in each of its destinations, but some of the lesser-known areas offer unique, authentic experiences that are hard to find in some of their more popular counterparts. One example, the Umbria region could be considered a “small Tuscany” more authentic but less famous. It offers history, nature, culture, gastronomic experiences and a lot more. Partnering with our friends at Italian Dream Incorporated, we have put together some ideas for a visit to Norcia, a town located in the Umbria region.
Suggested hotel:
Palazzo Seneca
At home in an Umbrian palace – this is the atmosphere you will find in this charming 16th-Century residence once more opening its doors in Norcia, in the heart of Umbria. A fusion of design and tradition, simplicity and quality: this is the secret of the new, elegant project promoted and realized by Vincenzo and Federico Bianconi, the last generation of a family that has been offering Hospitality and Catering in Italy since 1850. The skilled restoration, the research of unique materials and objects, along with the work of the best Umbrian craftsmen, have made Palazzo Seneca a unique destination.
Special activities in the area:
Rafting on the Corno River
Experience the thrills of rafting on the Corno River near Norcia. Climb aboard the ribber boat and conquer the raging currents. Discover the Umbrian hills and admire the breathtaking views of the countryside. With the perfect combination of team work, top-quality equipment, and support from professional guides, both beginners and experts can enjoy this unique whitewater rafting experience.
Experience the beautiful landscape of Umbria on a full-day tour of Spoleto and the Marmore Waterfalls.
First stop is Spoleto to discover the ancient Roman city. From the ruins of Roman temples to masterpieces of Renaissance painting that decorate the city cathedral, Spoleto is home to more than 2,000 years of history ripe for exploring. Learn about the city’s rich modern-day culture as the host of the annual Festival dei Due Mondi, and sample local flavor with optional olive oil and wine tastings. Throughout the tour, enjoy the personalized attention of a private guide.
After lunch, depart for the staggering Marmore Waterfalls. Among the highest in Europe, the waters cascade 540 feet (165 meters) down 3 terraces, the first (and highest) a drop of 272 feet (83 meters). The name derives from the calcium salts in the rocks that take on the appearance of marble. The manmade waterfalls were constructed by the Romans in 271 B.C. to drain the stagnant waters of the Velino River’s swamps, directing them to the natural leaps of Marmore and on into the Black River. Built over 2,000 years ago, this is the largest manmade waterfall in the world.
Truffle Cave
Undoubtedly the most well-known and typical activity in Norcia, home of the prestigious black truffle. Together with the quarryman and his dogs, in the Monti Sibillini National Park you will live an authentic experience which will involve all your senses and will end up with a tasty picnic.
Horseback riding
What better experience than enjoying uncontaminated sceneries and landscapes riding a horse through centuries-old trees and old water sources? A full immersion where the nature will surprise you with its beauty, don’t forget you are in Umbria’s wildest area!!
Cheese School
Knowing the art of Norcia dairymen will be an experience which will throw you back in time. Together with our trusted producer, you will cheese by yourself. A knowledge passed down from one generation to another is finally available to everyone.
Time with the bees
A real artisanal honey laboratory, where the experienced beekeeper will provide you with all the secrets behind the honey production, strongly connected to the mysterious and old bees’ world. End this wonderful day delighted by a final tasting.
