One Aldwych: An Independent Icon in Covent Garden

Experience We Love: If you like your London a little more backstage, you must meet Silvia Melchior, the One Aldwych theatre insider. Silvia creates rare opportunities to step behind the curtain, such as an exclusive Donmar Supporters’ Evening with a pre-show drinks reception, a post-show Q&A with the creative team, and a chance to meet the cast.

Standing proud on the Strand at the heart of Covent Garden, One Aldwych is one of the very few hotels in London that can truly call itself independent. Housed in a landmark 1905 Art Nouveau building (originally home to The Morning Post), it’s equal parts historic glamour and contemporary, forward-thinking comfort.

This is the place for Londoners at heart, wherever you’re from. From the front door of One Aldwych, London’s most glittering cultural addresses are within easy reach: West End theaters, galleries, museums, and the Royal Opera House, all right in the neighborhood. The hotel itself is a stylish, art-filled retreat designed as your other home, a place that feels both distinctly local and quietly indulgent.

More than a Place to Sleep

Envisioned as more than a place to lay your head, each of One Aldwych’s bedrooms and suites embraces a contemporary, stylish character ready to host, cocoon, and enchant. There are no templates here, just tailored spaces that blend modern comforts and British flair. Think signature suites that showcase architectural details, like the hotel’s Dome suite, with an eye-catching bedroom right below it, to The Somerset, with its signature circular living room, to corner suites that feel like your own London flat. For those with a family along, classic suites have a small living room and a sofa bed perfect for the littles.

  • Drinks and Dishes Crafted with Imagination

Indigo is One Aldwych’s signature restaurant and a Covent Garden favorite. Locals and want-to-be-locals adore this jewel for its imaginative dishes rooted in British ingredients and thoughtful sourcing (the hotel is B Corp™ certified, placing equal importance on conscious sourcing, flavor, and sustainability). Notably, every dish is entirely gluten- and dairy-free, without ever feeling like a compromise. Set overlooking the vibrant Lobby Bar, Indigo’s calm, elegant space makes it a natural choice for pre-theater dinners and lingering, late-evening bites.

Speaking of the Lobby Bar, it’s a destination in its own right, pairing a gallery-like ambiance with cocktails inspired by the hotel’s private collection of contemporary art (some 400 pieces). Crafted by One Aldwych’s mixologist in collaboration with pioneering creative Marcis Dzelzainis, the menu mirrors the spirit of the artworks themselves: original, modern, and quietly unexpected. Each drink, from the morello cherry mai tai to the quince and Earl Grey martini, explores the connection between nature and artist, celebrating contemporary distilleries and producers who honor traditional methods while creating something distinctly new.

    Afternoon Tea with Willy Wonka

For a playful twist on a London classic, One Aldwych’s afternoon tea leans into pure escapism, an immersive experience inspired by the magical, mouthwatering tastes of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Fizzy lifting drinks, snozzberry jam, a Delicious Purpleicious cocktail … it’s an endlessly enchanting way to experience afternoon tea in the heart of London’s Theatreland, right down to the beetroot and horseradish “hot ice cream for cold days.” It’s spot on for a spectacular special occasion or just saying “yes” to your inner child.

    A Night at the Theatre

Why stay three, when you can stay four? Enjoy the latest productions at the Donmar Warehouse Receive tickets and exclusive access to exceptional performances at the independent, non-profit Donmar Warehouse theatre. To elevate the experience even further, you can book the exclusive Donmar Supporters’ Evening, featuring a Champagne reception at the theatre, VIP tickets to the show, and a post-performance Q&A with the cast and creative team.

  • Lie Back, Get Active, or Dive In

One Aldwych’s best-kept secret sits beneath the hotel: a 59-foot lap pool, designed for true escape from the city’s pace. Thanks to an innovative mineral cleaning system, it’s chlorine-free, offering a gentler swim without the usual harsh chemicals.

Spa treatments are also available and approached as personalized rituals, using specialist products from Natura Bissé and OSKIA. Therapists tailor each session to what you need most, whether that’s revival, release, or full switch-off. In between sessions, feel free to unwind in the steam room or sauna. For high-energy days, there’s a spacious, well-equipped gym, as well as personal training support.

    The Curator Program

    Curator Highlight: Silhouettist Charles Burns

Charles Burns is widely recognized as the UK’s premier exponent of traditional silhouette portraiture and brings this elegant art form to life through intimate guest experiences. You can join Charles for a stroll along the Strand to uncover the overlooked history of silhouette portraiture. This ancient London street was home to many famous silhouettists in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Although nothing now remains of their studios, Charles will bring some of their work to show you and point out the locations where they were made. At the end of the walk, you’ll stop for a cup of tea together (Charles will have Earl Grey) and he’ll cut your own silhouettes from paper as a souvenir of the day.

London’s magic often lives beyond the obvious, in hidden courtyards, quiet gardens, historic side streets, and under-the-radar shops that reward those who know where to look. One Aldwych’s remarkable Curators open doors to that deeper London, inviting you to explore the city as an insider.

As London’s cultured independent hotel, the One Aldwych team is deeply enmeshed in its Covent Garden location. Yet on talking with local friends and neighbors, they have found much more to discover: an exquisite selection of Japanese silk-screened papers at stationers Choosing Keeping, exceptional vegan dining in Neal’s Yard, and London’s oldest wine bar. These ongoing surprises and discoveries are shared with you by the Curators, who hold your hand as you go off the beaten track.
